The production area of Brunello di Montalcino coincides with the communal territory of Montalcino. Distributed across that territory according to the best viticultural tradition, the Brunello estates offer visitors numerous opportunities to explore both exceptional wine and natural beauty.
The climate is typically Mediterranean, with precipitation concentrated in May, October, and November — around 700 millimeters annually. In winter, snow is not rare above 400 meters. The moderate-altitude hillside strip, where most estates are located, is shielded from the fog, ice, and late frost that affect the surrounding valleys, while persistent winds help keep the vines healthy throughout the growing season.
The main grape variety used is Sangiovese Grosso, a clonal selection of Sangiovese found in all red Tuscan wines.
Among the best Brunello estates to visit: Fanti Tenuta San Filippo, Fattoria dei Barbi, San Polino, Tenuta Le Potazzine, Podere Il Cocco, and Azienda Agricola Capanna.
