Wine RegionsBolgheri Wine Road
Bolgheri is where the Super Tuscan wine movement began in 1968 — a guide to the region's top estates, from Tenuta San Guido to Ornellaia.
Bolgheri, a picturesque wine region in Tuscany, is world-famous for producing some of Italy's most prestigious wines. Home to the renowned Super Tuscan wines, Bolgheri is a must-visit destination for wine lovers.
Bolgheri's wine legacy dates back centuries, but it gained international fame in the 20th century with the emergence of Super Tuscan wines — innovative blends that broke away from traditional Italian winemaking regulations and put Bolgheri on the global wine map.
Among the region's must-visit estates: Tenuta San Guido, credited with pioneering the Super Tuscan movement; Tenuta Ornellaia, synonymous with luxury and craftsmanship; Le Macchiole, a trailblazer in organic winemaking; Guado al Tasso, owned by the prestigious Antinori family; and Tenuta Chiappini, known for elegant, structured wines.
The best time to visit is April to October, when the vineyards are at their most scenic. Many estates require advance reservations, and Bolgheri is easily accessible from Florence, Pisa, and Livorno — renting a car or booking a private driver is recommended.
