If you want to plan a trip to the Chianti Classico wine-growing region you have to start your trip with the Chiantigiana otherwise simply known as the 222 road.
This is a road that goes from Florence to Siena and crosses the wide territory with vineyards, olive groves, and a lot of wineries where you can stop to have a wine tasting.
The Chiantigiana is not a properly straight road but goes winding through the hills covered by vineyards. It's pretty easy to get lost and for sure you will need a GPS that could lead you right to the wineries you have planned to get to.
Do not think that wineries are set all alongside the motorway like what happens in Napa Valley. Here in Chianti wineries are hidden in the middle of nowhere and sometimes you have to drive long through a dirty and dusty road, even if the region is the most beautiful in Tuscany.
Since it is not so easy to drink and drive someone of you could look into one of the many alternatives to driving.
Most of the wineries in the Chianti Classico area are located deep into the valley and the area is not suitable for extensive auto traffic. Several of these wineries have convenient tasting rooms located near Greve in Chianti Village, which is about 30 Km from Firenze and Siena.
Chianti Classico is the red Italian wine most known in the world. It's the combination of the Sangiovese vine with traditional Cannaiolo, Malvasia, and Trebbiano vine grapes. His color is ruby red, almost garnet. The smell is intense, sweet violet. The flavor is sapid, slightly tannic. Gradation: 12 degrees at least. This wine is produced only in Tuscany, in the following areas: Chianti Classico, Montalbano, Rufina, Colli Fiorentini, Colli Senesi, Colli Aretini, Colline Pisane. The Chianti Classico area, between Florence and Siena, is the one where the production is the most antique.
