Cà Marcanda Description
Tuscany's Maremma area, south of Livorno, is one
of Italy's most dynamic wine regions. Cà Marcanda, the Gaja
family's newest wine estate, is located in the famed Bolgheri district
in the commune of Castagneto Carducci.
Bolgheri's hot summer days, freschened by brisk sea air and cool
nights, create an ideal climate for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot,
Cabernet Franc and Syrah vines. The estate is characterized by two
distinct soil types - terre brune (dark soil), predominately
loam and clay, and terre chiare (white soil), which is
richer in limestone and filled with stones and pebbles.
As in the native Piedmont, Angelo Gaja's goal is to produce wines
that are true to their origins, reflecting the distinctive qualities
of their unique terroir.

Tasting Notes: Fruit and spice in the nose, fruit and leather in the taste
and smooth on the back end. You can really taste the unmistakable
elegance of the sangiovese. We drank this with pasta in a garlic-cream-tomato
sauce and it was a great match-up. I would think almost any pasta
will compliment this wine. Grape varieties: Merlot 55%, Syrah 35% and Sangiovese 10%. Food Pairings: We suggest to seve at 19° C. Good with red and white
meats, pork, poultry and aged cheeses. Total production: Awards Won:
Tasting Notes: Big, rich nose of cherry pie and spices. Richly textured
on the palate and full-bodied
Lingering finish with notes of fruit, pipe tobacco, and leather. Grape varieties: Merlot 50% , Cabernet Sauvignon 25%, Cabernet Franc 25% Food Pairings: We suggest to seve at 19° C. Good with stuffed game,
pot roast meat. Total production: Awards Won:
Tasting Notes: It is the major wine of the estate and is clearly more intense
and concentrated, more characterized in its expression of cassis,
plums, and sweet herbs, and endowed with both a solid structure
and a ripe, vanilla-laced close. The 2000 version of the wine seemed
a bit richer and rounder, but additional bottle time may well close
the gap. Grape varieties: Merlot 50%, Cabernet Sauvignon 40% and Cabernet franc 10% Food Pairings: We suggest to
serve at 20° C. Good with red meat, pasta with game sauce, steak. Total production: Awards Won:
