We took the Montepulciano tour in January, so the weather was not the best, but the advantage was that we were lucky enough to have our own tour with Vittorio. He was the perfect guide in every way, knowledgeable and helpful about every aspect of Tuscan life, food and wine. At Villa Santa Anna, we were taken through the traditional process by the owner, who took us down into the ancient cellars filled with huge oak barrels, the ceilings covered with rich-smelling mould to enhance the aging of the wine. Then we sat in the warm room of the Villa and drank wonderful wines with local prosciutto and salami that accompanies so perfectly the wines of Chianti and the Nobile di Montepulciano. Lunch was simple and perfect in a small restaurant, and then a second winery where we tasted the real Vin Santo - and Vittorio taught us how to taste olive oil also. Don't be put off by taking this tour out of season - even in the middle of winter it is worth getting out of the city, and seeing a little of the real Tuscany. The tour is worth every cent, and everything is taken care of, except of course the bottles of wine you may like to purchase for your own enjoyment - and don't stint on that or you'll regret it later!!Ian Coller, Melburne Australia
