October 7th 2010
As a part of my dream vacation to Italy, I wanted to have an Italian winery tour. As a Chianti lover, I knew that the Tuscany region of Italy was a clear destination. Since part of my trip (August 2010) was going to include a Mediterranean cruise that docked in Livorno (this is the closest dock to Florence and about a 1 hour drive to get to Florence), I could arrange an 8 hour tour. Of course, the cruise ship offered winery tours, but my no means did I wanted to be shuttled in a bus for a staged & limited winery tour with high pressured shopping.
After an easy online search, I landed on "Italy & Wine". Their website was informative, easy to use, and offered a great variety of tour options. In a quick e-mail exchange directly with Vittorio, my reservation was booked for a private winery tour! Vittorio picked my husband and I up at the Livorno docks and off we went to Tuscany! Throughout our day, Vittorio, our private sommelier, shared so much information with us regarding the history of wine making, agriculture in the region, olive oil making, life in Italy, and was kind enough to answer all of our questions.
We went to a small and a midsize winery. The owners of each winery were clearly passionate and proud of their wineries. They dedicated themselves to us throughout the tour and concluded with the most fantastic wine tastings complimented with wonderful cheeses, olive olis and meats!
There was no pressure to buy anything, however, we could not resist the unique opportunity. We purchased some olive oil, some wine for the rest of our trip, and a case of wine to send back to the US. The wine arrived on schedule (about a month after we purchased it) and will be savored for special occasions with a great memory of Vittorio and Italy!
